Housewife Lillian Hochberg, a German immigrant, started a mail-order business in 1951 out of her apartment in Mount Vernon, New York (the town that gave her enterprise its name). She had a knack for offering gifts and gadgets women wanted. The first female-founded company to be publicly traded on the American Stock Exchange, the Lillian Vernon Corporation was a multimillion-dollar business in its heyday.
