Janet Yellen

  • In January 2021, Yellen became the first woman to be named the U.S. Treasury Secretary.
  • She's no stranger to firsts: in 2013, Yellen was officially nominated to become the chair of the Federal Reserve, and when she was confirmed in 2014, she was the first woman to hold the position.
  • She's the only woman in American history to lead the U.S Treasury, the Federal Reserve, and the president's Council of Economic Advisers (which she led under President Bill Clinton from 1997 to 1999).
  • A respected economist, Yellen is considered to be a "dove" on monetary policy (more concerned with unemployment than inflation). She generally supports tighter financial regulation.
  • In 2021, she warned that coronavirus variants threaten the global economic recovery from the pandemic.
