Freeland spent 20 years of her career as a journalist, working as a deputy editor for the Financial Times and later becoming Reuter's managing director and editor of consumer news.
In 2013, she left journalism to run for a seat in the Canadian parliament, which she eventually won.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Freeland as minister of international trade in 2015; four years later, she was appointed as deputy prime minister.
In 2020, after a Cabinet shuffle by Trudeau, Freeland added "minister of finance" to her title. She submitted her first federal budget the following April, calling for the creation of a national childcare program.
