In 1876, a wife and mother like Ellen Harding Baker was expected to focus on the home: to cook and clean, to knit and sew. But the Iowa woman had boundless curiosity, particularly about space. She may not have been able to defy the conventions of her day to study the stars, but she could learn everything she could on her own and stitch it into a quilt.
